A convicted sex offender accused of possessing child pornography appeared in Langlade County Circuit Court earlier this week.

Bond was set at $25,000 for Michael Scharloo, 58, of 535 Century Ave., Antigo, who is currently on extended supervision stemming from a 2011 possession of child pornography conviction.

As a result of that earlier case, he must register as a sex offender for life.

On Monday, he was charged with three counts of possession of child pornography, one count of illegally using a different name and one count of failing to comply with the sex offender registry.

According to the criminal complaint, on April 5, police discovered a cell phone belonging to Scharloo that contained a Facebook page registered to an alias, numerous still images and four videos of naked children, and a message with another person in which Scharloo wrote, “I decided that living in Antigo is living in jail anyway. So I made it happen. I put myself in prison. … There are enough kids on my phone to put me away for life. … You know I like children. A lot.”

Each of the felony possession charges carries a maximum fine of $100,000, 25 years in prison or both. Each of the other two charges carries a maximum penalty of $10,000, six years in prison or both.
