Through a medical miracle of survival, Benjamin Levi Stookey was born Nov. 29, 1987, in Hamilton, Mont. As a perfect child of God, he entered heaven on Dec. 17, 2020.
In spite of his challenges of having Down Syndrome, at his birth his mother promised he would be able to read and he read his Bible, boxes and name tags to a second-grade level. He graduated from D.C. Everest High School in 2009.
Benjamin had a lovely smile that even made curmudgeons smile back. He was good at bowling, enjoyed fishing and looked forward to Easter Seals Camp every year. He always wanted a pet, but because of care home regulations, he had to wait until he got to heaven to get his pet.
Benjamin loved his brother, Michael, who died in 2007 and who greeted him in heaven. He will be so very missed by his parents, Larry and Dianne Stookey, and brothers and sisters, Bethany, Janie, Jenifer, Jeff, Todd and Sarah, nieces and nephews. Benjamin was dependent on others to care for him during his life, innocently trusting them to keep him safe and sound.
We wish to acknowledge the exceptional nurses and doctors at St. Elizabeth Hospital in the COVID ICU for their professional, compassionate and tender care of Benjamin as he battled this terrible illness during the final days of his life.
A graveside memorial service will be held after it is safe to do so at Peaceful Pines Pet Memorials & Family Sanctuary. Memorials in Benjamin’s name are being given to the Alzheimer’s Association designated for research.
