Duane Allen Helgeson of Post Lake passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Nov. 18, 2020, at age 91. He was born on Jan., 1930 in Antigo to Gunder and Ruth Helgeson. He married Elaine Wiedenhoeft on June 28, 1948. She preceded him in death in 2012.
He began his long career working for a local potato grower and went on to work as a heavy equipment operator for Oneida County for 16 years. From there, he went on to become a member of Local 139 Operators Union and ran heavy equipment for Michel’s Construction, and then for Mike Black Construction until he retired. During many years of his life, he also worked part-time as a logger and ran his small family farm.
He enjoyed the outdoors, deer hunting with his sons, grandchildren and other relatives. Deer hunting season, along with family gathering for Thanksgiving dinner, was an annual tradition that he always looked forward to. He was an avid Packer fan and enjoyed watching the games with many good friends and family at local establishments. He was an avid reader in his later years and was always ready to tell an interesting story; one being of his face-to-face encounter with a mother bear and her cubs, and the time he tamed a wild buck in his backyard. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor.
Survivors include his three sons, Michael (Katherine) Helgeson, Green Bay, Mark (Teresa) Helgeson, Baldwin, and Marshall (Susan) Helgeson, Pelican Lake; three daughters, Maureen (Gary) Leindecker, Pelican Lake, Mischelle (Charles) Hittle, Lady Lake, Florida, and Mary Ellen Severt, Post Lake; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline (George) Olinske, Cadott, and Sharon (Roger) Mackie, Oak Creek; and his faithful companion Bo, his dog.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years and sister, Naomi Vaughn.
On Nov. 15, he came to saving faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He went to his eternal home three days later.
There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, at 10 a.m. at Elcho Cemetery. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Bradley Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
