The snowstorm that was expected to launch winter across the state, including here in Langlade County mostly fizzled this morning. A few inches of snow has fallen and winds were tossing it around, but the predictions of substantial snowfall and hazardous driving did not materialize.

Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson has told the New York Times that he has decided to play in the NFL rather than continue his baseball career in the Colorado Rockies organization.

January 13, 1997

Winds that whipped snows across the Antigo flats late Wednesday and early today are bringing deadly wind chill readings to Langlade County and most of northern Wisconsin. The National Weather Service is predicting wind chills for the Antigo area tonight in the 40-to-60 below zero range, which requires extra protection and come dangerously close to the point where all exposure must be avoided.

A stellar five goal performance by Joe Piskula wasn’t enough for the Antigo Pee Wee “A” hockey team as it had to settle for a 6-6 tie with Mosinee. Mike Messerschmidt scored Antigo’s remaining goal.

January 13, 1972

The coldest weather in five years descended across the area as temperatures struck the 38 below zero mark last night. And with winds estimated between 10-15 miles-per-hour, wind chill marks dipped into 60-to-70 below.

Despite the bitter cold weather, over 200 dairy farmers attended the Associated Milk Producers, Inc., annual meeting and re-elected Dewain Washatko as the district’s president and the regional director of the Hy-Land Lakes district. Others elected include Andrew Priebe as vice president, Clarence Krueger as secretary-treasurer, and Sven Gustavson for division director.

January 13, 1947

The M. Hunter Grocery, located at First Avenue and Pine Street, will open for business tomorrow. A free lunch is being offered for the opening.

The Elcho basketball team will bring an 0-4 record to the floor Friday night when it meets conference leader Eagle River, 4-0. The Antigo team goes to Wausau for a game Friday night.

The Sherman Wade Agency is offering a two-bedroom cottage on Bass Lake for sale today at a bargain, off-season price. The home is near the clubhouse and has a beautiful sand beach.
