Langlade Springs in Polar is becoming known as a preferred bottler of premium and specialty water that is being sold across the United States.
A local officiating crew has been tapped to referee the WIAA girls Division 5 semi-final game. Todd Mayr, Steve Kafka and Curt Johnson, all from the Antigo area, will be calling their first ever high school state game.
Antigo native Dr. Mark Sharon, now residing in Plymouth, was awarded the Worldloppet gold medal in cross country ski racing this past spring after competing in and finishing the Birkekbeinerrennet in Lillehammer, Norway.

Antigo School board member Arlo Cairo has resigned her position, and she did so in a rather stormy fashion. The board accepted the resignation “with regret” after a closed session over personnel issues Thursday.
Langlade Figure Skating Club will close out the season with its fifth annual showcase Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the multi-purpose building at the fairgrounds.
A Milwaukee religious leader has been selected as principal of Antigo’s new All Saints Catholic School System. Sister Carol Jean Zais, SDS, a member of the Sisters of the Devine Savior in Milwaukee, was chosen by the executive search committee. All Saints will begin operation in the fall of 1998.

The Antigo boys basketball team continued to be the talk of the town today as students, parents and fans began making plans to make the jaunt to state competition in Madison. The Robins, co-champions in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, narrowly defeated Shawano 52-51 at the sectional finals earlier in the week.
Greater fines and more jail time may be in store for traffic violators as Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lacey asked the Legislature to declare on traffic deaths. Some of the ideas posed included a breath alcohol screening at the scene of any accident, mandatory use of seatbelts, updated safety equipment on all vehicles and bicycles.

By recommendations of the Teacher’s Committee, the Antigo Board of Education has approved basic salary contracts for the coming school year. A two-year graduate teacher will get $1,900 per year and $2,200 in six years. A three-year graduate gets $2,100 to start and $2,525 in eight years and it goes up slowly for four and five-year graduates. Single men get an additional; $200 and married men $300.
The City Council has granted a $20 per month salary increase to members of the police and fire departments and some of the supervisory and clerical staff.
The police department reported that during the month of February, breaking and entering were among the most reported offenses. On the list of 49 offenses, 10 of them were illegal entries. There were six people cited for speeding.
