Halfway through its Great Northern Conference schedule, the Antigo Red Robins girls basketball team may have finally turned a corner.

Tuesday night, the Lady Robins played as complete a game as they have this season, earning a 47-35 home win against Northland Pines.

“We played as a team and our scoring was spread throughout the team,” head coach Carla Wissbroecker said. “We ran our offense well and controlled the boards in the second half.”

The game was tied at 21 at the halftime break, but the Lady Robins’ advantage in the rebounding department helped them pull away, outscoring the Eagles 26-14 in the second half.

Leading the balanced Antigo scoring attack was Sophie Schlieve with 12 points as the sophomore continued her recent strong play. She also added nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

Lonna Weix contributed ten points, while adding nine rebounds and four steals. Greta Parsons just missed out on being the third Lady Robins in double digit scoring, with nine points along with eight rebounds, while Natalie Dewey had seven points.

Noelle Tischnedorf contributed five points, all coming in the second half to go along with six assists, while Heather Arlen chipped in four.

Antigo also saw its turnover number drop substantially. After a rough night in that department Friday in Rhinelander, the Robins committed just 13 to 29 for Northland Pines.

If the team can become consistent in that category, the Robins may have a big second half of the season in store.

“The girls have been working really hard and doing the little things right,” Wissbroecker added.

Carly Huelskamp led Northland Pines in scoring with seven.

Antigo improved to 2-4 with the win and have now won two of their past three outings. Northland Pines dropped to 1-9 overall, 1-7 in the GNC.

Next up for the Lady Robins is a Friday trip to conference leader Mosinee, which will serve as a good litmus test for Wissbroecker’s team. Mosinee won the season opening matchup between the teams by 19 points on Dec. 1.
