Freshman phenom MacKenzie Wissbroecker soared to new Antigo High School lengths at the Great Northern Conference track meet in Medford on Tuesday.

Amongst a brigade of solid Red Robin performances, the lead story of this meet was a new school all-time best. Wissbroecker smashed the AHS record in the long jump by more than three inches. She leaped to 17’ 10.25. The previous Robin record was 17’ 7.” That jump also established a new record for the GNC conference meet.

Wissbroecker was not done there. She also set a new GNC bar in the 100 meter dash, zooming to the line in a flashy 12.54 seconds.

A season of tough training paid off across the Robin lineup, with a series of personal records set. Those included Heather Arlen in both shot put and discus, Lily DeWan in high jump, Holly Johnson in the 200 meter, Alyssa Smith in the 800 meter, Clare Heuss in the 3200 meter, Holly Zimmerman in the long jump, and Brooklyn Radtke in the triple jump.

The girls relay teams also set their new high marks in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter runs.

On the boys side, new bests were set by Logan Edwards in the 800 meter, Kaden Steckbauer in the 400 meter, Max Collura and Aiden Anderson in the long jump, and Zeek Fobes in the 100 meter dash. The boys relay teams of 4x200 and 4x400 went for new season bests as well.

Oh yeah, and there was the matter of all this running and throwing around in the excessive heat. If that was not enough to contend with, a batch of thunderstorms delayed the proceedings late in the day.

“What a wild night at the GNC Championships,” said Robins coach Casey Hildebrandt. “The meet started with the hottest temps of the year, only to be postponed with two events left due to an incoming storm. After 90 minutes of delay, the lightning was no longer in sight and we started back up at 8:45.”

Hildebrandt is filled with optimism about his state contenders, including the relay teams, Steckbauer, Edwards, Arlen, Radtke, and of course Wissbroecker.

“We had a lot of really great performances in the conference meet as we head into the WIAA Regional Championship on Monday,” he said. “It’s always a bit of a chess match as coaches move athletes around throughout the year and make final selections right up to conference and regionals. The top four advance out of regionals and sectionals so we have great chances and confidence to send a strong group out of regionals, but of course it’s a big meet with a lot of pressure so it’s always fun to watch it unfold.

“We play the chess game a bit as well, but it’s also just as much testing athletes in other or new events, getting experience and times, and getting them new competition and challenges throughout the year. Overall, we more or less have everyone set in their events and things are shaping up to be a great showdown on Monday in Medford.”

The division two regional track action fires up in Medford at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
