The White Lake girls basketball program has a new coach at the helm as the 2020-21 season is set to begin.
Trina Woiak’s hire was approved Thursday by the White Lake Board of education.
Woiak takes over a program that has struggled for both numbers and wins in recent seasons, but she is ready for the challenge. Woiak served as an assistant coach a season ago and has been involved in the game for quite some time.
“I grew up in a family that was pretty involved with basketball,” she said. “When I arrived in White Lake last year I was able to assist the team. I loved spending time in the gym with the girls and watching them become better players. When the head coaching opportunity became available I decided to put my name out there.”
While it may be challenging at first to change things in the win column, improvement will be key in a season unlike any other.
“I’m excited to see how the girls will improve over this season,” Woiak said. “It’s going to be interesting and I’m sure COVID will throw us some curveballs.”
The first COVID curveball comes in the delay of both the girls and boys basketball seasons in White Lake.
Originally slated to open Dec. 1, the Lady Lakers will now begin things on Dec. 11 at Goodman-Pembine, jumping right in to the Northern Lakes portion of their schedule.
An 18 game schedule is on the books a of now.
The boys team begins play Dec. 14, also at Goodman-Pembine.
